Ginger and Lemon: Pantry Staples Worth Having
Ginger and lemon make plain food taste alive. Here is how to keep both on hand and use them each week.

Why keep them
Ginger is warm and peppery. Lemon is tart and fresh. Between them they can rescue a dull soup, a plain chicken dinner or a bowl of rice.
Storing each one
- Ginger. Keep a firm, smooth piece in the fridge. Peel only what you need.
- Lemons. A bowl on the counter works for a week. In the fridge they last longer.
Easy weekly uses
- Soup finish. Stir in lemon juice right before serving.
- Quick sauce. Grate ginger into soy sauce with a little garlic.
- Fresh water. Add a lemon slice and a coin of ginger to a pitcher.
